Andrejs Rubins was once one of the leaders of the Latvian football team. He has 117 caps for the national team, which is the second most. Rubin, who was imprisoned in the Riga Central Prison as a teenager, also has an amazing record – he has played in 59 matches in a row for the Latvian national team. We are publishing the fourth fragment of Rubin’s autobiography written by the co-author and publisher of the book “I sat once” Askold Uldrikis.
– The safest way to invest money is real estate. You can only lose it if a war starts – a millionaire from Riga taught me the basics of business. I won’t say his last name, because things were difficult for him later. But at the time when we met, this millionaire lived with a large scope – in a proud Baltezer villa, in the adjacent territory of which even a private football field was built. He knew how to trick me, because I quickly agreed to the offer to get involved in the real estate business.
At first, I bought two luxury apartments with a wonderful view of the sea in the Bulgarian resort of Golden Sands. One for 180 thousand euros, the other for 120. I rented out the apartments, and I was paid five thousand a year for both, of course, covering all utility bills. In addition, we wrote a provision in the contract that I can rest there for three months a year. I was more interested in this recreational opportunity than the small profit. True, the wife, children and girlfriend managed to use it only once. We planned that someday we will sell these apartments much more expensively.
Soon the new companion offered to get involved in business in Romania – to buy apartments and sell them at a higher price after some time. I got money for such investments by mortgaging both apartments in Bulgaria and also a house in Mežapark. The first deal turned out to be very profitable. We bought three apartments with black decoration – for 250, 150 and 100 thousand. The masters worked on these apartments for a few months, and we sold them, earning more than 200 thousand.
