I warn of panic, let’s be careful optimists, Zeman said of the covid

“It would be good for veils to be mandatory only in outbreaks, while voluntary elsewhere,” Zeman said. He is not in favor of widespread measures and unnecessary panic. He recommended caution where more people gather. “I warn against panic, let’s be careful optimists,” he told Prima television. He broadcasts it all on Sunday.

It was the first public appearance by the head of state since the end of August, when he broke his arm and underwent surgery. Castle spokesman Jiří Ovčáček posted photos from today’s shooting on Twitter, in which the president is with an orthosis fixing his right hand.

The Czech Republic currently has the highest rate of coronavirus infection from neighboring countries, with a record 798 more infected on Friday. The number of hospitalized and patients in serious condition is also gradually increasing. From 1 September, the obligation to wear veils in indoor public spaces, such as public transport or in offices, has been extended in the country. Further tightening awaits Prague in the next two weeks, where, according to the Ministry of Health, community transmission is beginning. Curtains will again be mandatory in shops or common areas of schools, and bars or discos will be closed overnight.

Zeman moved to the Lány chateau after several days of hospitalization at the Central Military Hospital in Prague, where doctors operated a titanium screw into his arm during the operation. He is now undergoing convalescence. He was injured on August 25 after deciding to go without a cane and without the help of security after watching the evening news on television. He has been suffering from polyfunctional neuropathy for a long time, which is a neurological complication of diabetes that makes his feet feel less difficult.

The doctors of the military hospital operated on his arm that evening and released him after four days. Recovery should take six to eight weeks.

Babiš and Hamáček are going after Zeman

Due to injuries, Zeman canceled a visit to the South Moravian Region planned for the beginning of September. According to Ovčáček’s earlier statement, the President’s Office is planning working meetings in Lány this month. The castle will gradually inform about their dates. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) and Deputy Prime Minister Jan Hamáček (ČSSD), among others, want to meet with Zeman, and they also want to negotiate with him on the dismissal of the head of the Office for the Protection of Competition (ÚOHS) Petr Rafaj. According to the Blesk Zprávy server, the meeting of both coalition party leaders with Zeman should take place on Tuesday.
