Vahhley, a native single mother from NYC, comes to the stage of the famous TV game show “American Idol” after spending 8 months in the shelter system for the growing homeless population in the city.
The young woman was left homeless after her marriage ended and she went with her young son to live with her mother in Brooklyn.
“She tells me, ‘Vahhley, I really feel like I want you to be the best you can be and I don’t want you to depend on me all your life,” she recounted today, explaining what led her to move to a haven first in the Bronx and then in Brooklyn.
“It was very difficult to be there for 8 months… I was struggling. I had no job. I didn’t have much and didn’t know what to do ”, remember in statements to ABC News, department of the same channel of the contest.
While in the shelter at Grand Concourse, knowing that Vahhley sang the director encouraged her to perform at a local fundraiser. Shortly after he told him that he should try “American Idol”, insisting that “this was his calling” and he should do it.
