“I want to live a little longer”. Marco Madeddu thinks about it, leaves the clinic in Zurich and returns to the island

Marco Madeddu has rethought it. The 45-year-old from Carbonia for almost two years fighting against ALS, was in Switzerland from Monday to end his life by resorting to assisted suicide.

He saw no other way out of his disease, but the approach of the fateful moment must have made him change his mind. So he left the specialized clinic where he was staying and left for Carbonia. “I’ve decided to live a little longer”.

“I admire those who struggle – he confessed before leaving -, but you no longer struggle in the awareness of losing against a disease that does not even give you a 0.1 percent chance of winning. I will lose my word and my breath is the only one I deeply regret that I decided to go and die in exile because in Italy politics has taken over life and death ”.

An accusation against the Italian legislation on the matter. Last night Madeddu met the doctors he had been in contact with for months. This morning, as per procedure, they tried to dissuade him, the same thing that his closest family and friends have been doing for months.

Attempts that must have found an opening. So much so that Marco has decided to live, at least a little longer, with what he called the “disease of asking, because independence is totally lost”.
