“I want & I can work”: Ö3’s Labor Day Campaign for Inclusion of People with Disabilities in the Workplace

Hitradio Ö3 is once again dedicating “Labor Day” to the professional participation of people with disabilities

Vienna (OTS) Under the motto “I want & I can work – and I deserve a chance!”, the big Ö3 apprenticeship campaign will take place again this year on May 1st. On “Labor Day” companies can register with Hitradio Ö3 and offer young people with disabilities apprenticeships. Young people with disabilities then have the opportunity to apply for open positions. For Social Affairs Minister Johannes Rauch, this initiative is a successful example of active inclusion: “People with disabilities can and want to work and deserve a fair opportunity to enter the workforce. The Ö3 initiative helps to clarify the added value for companies in a way that is effective for the public.” ***

After the positive experiences in previous years, the major apprenticeship campaign will start again on May 1st, which will be carried out by “Hitradio Ö3” with the support of the “Network for Vocational Assistance” (NEBA) of the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Labor Market Service. Ö3 presenter Philipp Hansa moderates the “Labor Day” from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. together with young people with disabilities who would like to enter the world of work. Their goals and wishes are discussed, what challenges young people often face on the way to an independent life and why they are an opportunity for their future employers.

The campaign is aimed at companies that deal with the topic of “work and disability”. You can report your open apprenticeship positions to Hitradio Ö3. These jobs are then placed with young people with disabilities via the NEBA operating service of the Ministry of Social Affairs and the AMS labor market service. Several reports about young people with disabilities in the world of work will also be broadcast on Hitradio Ö3 next week. “The professional participation of people with disabilities is an essential contribution to active inclusion. The Ö3 initiative makes it clear to the general public that young people with disabilities can and want to work. They also deserve the same opportunity as everyone else for this”, bemphasizes Social Affairs Minister Johannes Rauch. “I would like to thank Hitradio Ö3, the NEBA operating service and the AMS for their cooperation and important commitment.”

The action in detail

  • All interested companies are asked to register and fill out a form on the Ö3 homepage.
  • The NEBA Betriebsservice, a central point of contact for companies for all questions and concerns relating to the topic of “work and disability”, contacts the companies that have reported as part of the campaign and declared their willingness to offer young people with disabilities an open apprenticeship position .
  • Newly registered apprenticeships are reported to the AMS by the NEBA operating service. The exact procedure depends on regional cooperation agreements. If registered apprenticeship positions cannot be filled with young people with disabilities, e.g. because there are no suitable applicants in a certain region, positions are transferred to the job portal of the AMS.

Professional participation and added value for companies

For many companies, the employment of people with disabilities represents added value in several respects: With appropriate support from the company, the young people can be developed into valuable specialists who often stay with the company for a long time. The working atmosphere is also positively influenced.

In many cases, companies are not aware of the diverse range of support and assistance services available, such as youth coaching, training fit or job coaching. The key factor here is the continuous care path of the Network for Professional Assistance (NEBA) of the Ministry of Social Affairs. A special role is played by the vocational training assistance, which accompanies young people if necessary during the apprenticeship training and is also available as a contact for companies.
