The upcoming departure of Calvin Stengs from Feyenoord caused quite a few surprising reactions in Rotterdam-Zuid. Kenneth Perez understands the deal with Major League Soccer club Charlotte FC from both parties.
“I understand it,” the Dane began his argument on ESPN. “Feyenoord paid six million, now gets eight. You have a profit of two million or at least break even,” Perez corrected himself after presenter Milan van Dongen brought up the resale percentage for OGC Nice.
‘I think they have estimated: with Stengs we will not win the war and that money and salary we can spend better. Perhaps something will now become available in the salary budget to bring in other players, of whom they think: they will take us further’, says the former professional, who thinks that Stengs is making the move to America for financial reasons. ‘In the MLS you earn a fortune if you are a key-player bent.’
Kees Kwakman, the other guest at the table at Dit Was Het Weekend, found the Stengs news remarkable. ‘It’s quite a step aside in your career’, Kwakman said. ‘My first thought was: it has to do with his physical problems, his knee. Slot we also heard about that last season, that it’s still not good. Because he’s going to miss out on the Dutch national team, is 25 and is leaving the European fields.’
In the article below, Feyenoord watcher Martijn Krabbendam explains why Feyenoord is prepared to cooperate in Stengs’ departure.
