23-year-old police officer Austin Walsh was shot and killed by his roommate and colleague, he writes among others NBC News.

The two reportedly took a break from playing video games when the situation escalated.

The housemates were standing and talking to each other, when the assailant stood up and “playfully” aimed what he thought was an unloaded gun. He then pulled the trigger, Sheriff Wayne Ivey said at a news conference, according to NBC News.

– A bullet was fired, hitting Walsh and killing him, police said.

Called the police

Also, NBC News writes that the perpetrator immediately called the police, saying that he had accidentally shot his roommate and needed help.

When the police arrived at the scene, he appeared distraught and devastated.

According to Sheriff Ivey, the two were best friends.

“This is an unnecessary and totally avoidable accident that not only took the life of a wonderful young man, but forever changed the life of another young man who made an extremely poor and irresponsible choice,” Ivey said.

– Walsh was such a good boy and our hearts are broken. He will be greatly missed by the police and our community and our prayers go out to his family, he continued.

Investigation in progress

The comrade was arrested and charged with murder.

– Florida police continue to conduct interviews and gather evidence. It’s an ongoing investigation, says police spokesman Dana Kelly United States today.

Police adviser Roy Bedard tells USA Today that police are trained never to point a gun, or anything that looks like a gun, at anything you don’t intend to shoot at.

– At the police academy, for example, we use fake weapons. We use plastic and aluminum guns and don’t let students point them at each other, knowing they’re not real, because of the habit you can develop doing so, says Bedard.
