Infectiologist Erika Vlieghe (UZA) reacts expectantly to the announced relaxation. “We’ll see how the numbers evolve in the coming weeks. I think people will remain cautious of their own accord,” he said.
The GEMS chairman had previously called for not all measures to be resolved. ‘I am pleased that a number of measures have been retained. It is also good that extra caution is being shown in Brussels.’
Vlieghe has faith in the sense of responsibility of the Belgians. “I think people will be careful on their own. It remains to be seen how the figures will evolve now.’
The infectiologist recognizes the impact of the vaccination campaign, but warns that it is not yet complete. ‘Prime Minister De Croo is right when he says that the vaccinations are a game changer. But right now we must continue to focus on vaccinating even more people. Hopefully the protection will last after that.’
