Alfons Groenendijk left ADO The Hague at the end of last year. For four years he was a trainer at the Eredivisie club, but after disappointing results this season he kept the credit to himself. In an interview with Broadcasting West Groenendijk discusses his departure from ADO. He said he was leaving the club in the hope that money would be released for reinforcements.
Groenendijk has been succeeded by Alan Pardew, who welcomed six new players this month. The ex-trainer of ADO is surprised that there is money now. “I never received those signals. I often asked for it, already in the summer, because the group we had really had to be overhauled, “says Groenendijk. “We had really squeezed the selection in recent seasons and important players had left. But instead of being able to invest in the selection, I was told that there was no budget and that even six tons went down. “
Groenendijk asked for more budget several times, but that was not possible. Together with the technical director Jeffrey van As, who has since left, he spoke with many interesting players for ADO. “If the money had been there then, the changing room would have looked very different in the summer. And that is why I made the decision to leave the club, hoping that the money for reinforcements would be released. I hoped that what is happening at ADO would happen. Even though that is personally financially bad for me, because my contract that continued for another year and a half at ADO is now in the Hofvijver. ”
Like Van As, Groenendijk was regularly critical of the Chinese club owner United Vansen. Hui Wang did not agree that the Chinese player Yuning Zhang almost never played under Groenendijk. According to the former trainer, that played an important role in the fact that there was no extra budget for reinforcements. “Yes, that certainly played a role. Jef (Van As, ed.) And I had never received that money, because a lot has happened. “
Groenendijk admits that there have been several incidents that were not conducive to the relationship with club owners. Also an interview with Broadcasting West had a negative impact. “After that broadcast, the necessary things happened. I received an angry mail from Wang, who had seen the entire interview with me. The new director (Mohammed Hamdi, ed.) Advised me not to answer Wang’s angry mail. But everyone who knows me a little knows that I did, of course. I also placed all the people in the cc that Wang had put in the cc, so that also ran high. ”
The clubless trainer says he had hoped that ADO “would come loose from China”. He sees that the tentacles from China go deeper and deeper into the club. “I notice that at all levels within ADO. And there are now people at ADO who come in through all sorts of detours, who were initially one hundred percent opposed to China and now fully agree with it. People you normally only ask for an opinion if the kitchen of the players’ home needs a new wallpaper. And those who are now fully in the spotlight, that is also a pity about this whole story. ”
