I Propose Postponing the Election to Help Kiai Ma’ruf Amin

Chairman of the National Awakening Party (PKB) Muhaimin Iskandar alias Cak Imin said a proposal postpone the 2024 election echoed to save the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia Ma’ruf Amin.

He joked about this when commemorating the 62nd anniversary of the Indonesian Islamic Student Movement (PMII) at the National Museum, Jakarta, Monday (18/4).

“I proposed that in order to help Kiai Ma’ruf in order to help the people. Why help Kiai Ma’ruf? So that later in the hereafter we will be asked, this lack is lacking. The reason must be that two years of a pandemic can’t do anything. People say the government is lacking this less than that. Two years stuck lol, it’s okay. The DPR’s budget is used up for the pandemic. IKN has not been explored at all,” said Cak Imin.

However, he denied that he had been persistent in fighting for the 2024 election to be postponed.

“It will be written later that Cak Imin insists on delaying. I’m not insistent. I’m just stating a proposal. If PMII refuses, yes, sami’na wa atho’na. That’s just the way it is. Moreover, the president has made it clear that his attitude is like that. The DPR laughed.

It is known, the General Chairperson of the PMII Executive Board Muhammad Abdullah Syukri stated that he rejected the proposal to postpone the 2024 election and extend the presidential term of office to three terms.

Cak Imin does not question if PMII rejects the proposed postponement of the election. For him, the pros and cons are natural in a democratic country.

“Is it true that a democratic country cannot propose? If PMII refuses, it doesn’t matter what it is called a democratic country,” said Cak Imin.

Cak Imin then thanked the PMII chairman who had different views with him. He explained that the democratic climate has opened up space for mutual support and rejection. He also hoped that his proposal should not lead to demonstrations.

“And the proposal doesn’t need to be demoed. It’s called a proposal. Moreover, the demo uses thumps,” he said.

Cak Imin is one of the figures who proposed the postponement of the 2024 General Election. Apart from him, PAN chairman Zulkifli Hasan also shared the same opinion in supporting the proposed postponement of the election.

However, at a cabinet meeting some time ago, Jokowi had ordered his ministers not to talk about postponing the election or extending the presidential term.

The former mayor of Solo confirmed that the election was carried out according to the schedule for February 14, 2024. Jokowi had ordered his subordinates to prepare a budget that would be used by election organizers.
