In Romanian schools, the teacher enters the classroom, most of the time, after students. The teacher is expected, a sign that he is “superior”, psychologist Mihai Copăceanu writes about him Facebook.
While in American schools it is the teachers who greet the students. Research shows that when teachers wait for children, their involvement in school increases by 20% and disruptive behavior decreases, notes the psychologist.
In an interview for Ziare.com, psychologist Mihai Copăceanu explained how he sees the whole situation.
The attitude of the teachers is reflected in the reaction of the students
“I liked the study from America which highlighted how teachers welcome children. I posted it on Facebook and received many comments from Romanian teachers who highlighted the following point.
If in America the teacher has the same class, that is, he has class for him, in Romania, for example, it happens that students change lessons every hour, and this could explain why students are already in class when the physics teacher arrives, chemistry etc.
However, it is a sensitive issue but we are referring to how the positive, smiling, delightful and welcoming attitude of the teacher not only increases student engagement but also reduces disruptive behaviors in the classroom. It is clear that the attitude of the teachers influences the attitude of the students,” explained Mihai Copăceanu.
Students assume teacher status
“At one point I was in 8th grade, in three different classes on the same day, and I did a little experiment. I walked into each class with a different attitude. In my 8th grade, I was excited, proof that even the kids , in the first few minutes, they shared my energy.
Then, in the second class, I had a serious, authoritative voice, and the students also greeted very seriously. In the third grade I had a neutral attitude, combining the two types of approaches, and the students were also rather closed”, the psychologist points out.
The teacher must be punctual
“I think we need a better mood from the teacher, some pleasure. Students are not just characters who need to have a right position in front of the teacher.
But this aspect is also true, that often, in many schools in Romania, the teachers no longer enjoy the respect of the students, on the contrary, sometimes they are attacked.
But we have to remember that the positive attitude of the teacher, if he is punctual and many other things, influence the student a lot,” says Mihai Copăceanu.
