I Ordered an iPhone 15 Pro Max and Got a Fake with Android Instead: What Happened?

Instead of the most equipped iPhone, the customer received a fake with Android
Fortunately, the fraud could be recognized just by looking at the device itself
The mix-up probably occurred in the distribution chain

If you order a smartphone directly from the manufacturer, you kind of expect it to arrive without much trouble. The same thing was thought by a Brit with the nickname theEdmard, who boasted about his curious story on Reddit. He ordered a brand new iPhone 15 Pro Max from Apple’s official website, but as soon as the shipment arrived from the DPD carrier, he was in for an unpleasant surprise – the phone looked very suspicious at first, and after turning it on, it turned out to be a Chinese copy with an operating by the Android system.

He got an Android instead of an iPhone

After unpacking from the box, the customer noticed that a protective film was stuck on the phone’s display. So at first he believed that Apple had made a mistake and sent him the unit from the complaint. But that was not all. “Another thing I noticed after turning it on was that the display was not very responsive. The active backlight even when displaying black indicated that it was not an OLED panel, and there was also a prominent chin at the bottom.” theEdmard mentioned. After turning on the phone, the buyer went through a dubious setup process to ensure that the device officially sent to them by Apple was a fake.

“I immediately noticed it was an Android device. It might have convinced my grandfather, but it didn’t fool me.” theEdmard added. The customer was quite lucky not to sign in to the device with their Apple ID and also avoid setting up Apple Wallet, giving fraudsters access to their sensitive data. It is not very common for a fake device to arrive from an official store. A similar practice is much more common, for example, among dubious sellers of used equipment.

Don’t overlook

Do you have an iPhone? This scam targets you directly and not everyone will detect it

The customer turned to Apple support, which promised him a prompt solution to the situation, however, how the company will approach this matter is a question. It is highly unlikely that the fake device came directly from Apple, so the confusion must have occurred in the distribution chain, most likely with one of the employees of the courier company. Although such cases are rare, they do happen occasionally. So it’s always good to be vigilant and address any issues as soon as possible.
