Catherine has lived in for 22 years New York, before that 10 years in London. Every year on New Year’s Eve she goes out for dinner in Belgium with some friends. “We exchange stories, because then we really see each other, because most of the information we have from each other comes from social media,” she says in De Thuiskomers.
De Backer first worked for MTV in London for 10 years, but eventually ended up in New York.
“A friend told me that friends of hers started an art fair. I started working there for free and for nothing, as a volunteer”. She later became Executive Director.
In the meantime, Katelijne has been living abroad for a while. But she has still remained involved with Belgium. She doesn’t know yet if she wants to come back. “I love living in New York, it’s my city. But I am also very realistic. As long as you have a job and earn money, that’s fine,” she says. “Something that interests me more and more is ‘health insurance’. Because if you lose your job, you also lose it and then Belgium seems very attractive when you are older. My son had broken his arm. We have health insurance and it still cost us $4000,” says De Backer.
