Convinced that she fulfilled her duty, despite the criticism she faced since coming to office in 2018, Ana Guevara assured yesterday that she will leave the direction of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports (Conade) without regrets, with a clear conscience and certain that he did not enjoy overprotection in his administration.

Many things were achieved. There is nothing to regret. It is true that they criticized my relationship with the athletes and my management, but this job is not about sentimentality, but about order and discipline; that is the legacy we leave to the next directorhe commented.

The law was not broken in Conade, because if it had been, I would have reported it myself. The management of resources was always very clear and that is why I had and am grateful for the support of the President.

Guevara faced several investigations by the Superior Audit of the Federation (ASF). In one of them, Conade was accused of alleged deviations that suggest damages to the treasury of 398 million pesos. The agency was also accused of having irregularities in the execution of spending.

He had a critical relationship with the federations; especially with swimming and archery, which, he claimed, broke the law. Consequently, athletes in aquatic specialties did not receive their scholarships for more than a year, so they had to turn to private initiatives. Several sued Conade and won their lawsuits.

The former sprinter, who was the first woman to lead the organization, held the position during the 2019 Lima Pan American Games, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 2023 San Salvador Central American and Caribbean Games, the 2023 Pan American Games in Chile and closed with Paris 2024.

What we lacked was a bigger budget for the youth teams. I would have liked them to attend all their preparation competitions; however, it was not possible. That’s what I missed doing.

The message for Rommel

Guevara and Pacheco (his successor) already had a first meeting. In it, the Sonoran spoke with the Yucatecan about the panorama she will find upon her arrival in office.

He was my teammate for some years and will realize that the responsibility of being a public official implies facing the same problems as me. It is not a matter of sentimental logic, we must have empathy with the athletes, yes, but also responsibility and order.

Regarding his future, Guevara has nothing defined.

I don’t want to create expectations and then suffer. I will be patient. I will make the decision on what’s next in the next few days. Meanwhile, I have the responsibility to conclude this administration and properly hand over the institution, with black numbers and without any alarm of any kind.

Although it was rumored that he could remain in office, the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, decided to appoint the former diver.
