The Descent into Control and Abuse

Following a revelation of Sergio’s cannabis addiction in 2018, Kathleen sought help, but during couple’s therapy, his focus on sexual demands only highlighted the underlying issues.
In a desperate attempt to improve their situation, Kathleen suggested they move closer to Sergio’s family in Portugal. However, this relocation proved fruitless, leading to a return to Ireland six months later, where tensions only worsened.
The Turning Point
The turning point came after a disastrous birthday weekend in 2019, during which Sergio raped Kathleen. Pleading for him to stop, she experienced a traumatic violation that made her realize the severity of her situation. Following this tragedy, a friend urged her to report Sergio to the authorities, planting the seed for Kathleen’s courageous decision to seek help.
"I knew I was going to have to fight for my story to be believed," Kathleen reflected, recalling the emotional turmoil of sharing her truth.
