The good news from today is that Shell will explore the Silistar gas field.
No one disputes that the diversification of gas routes and sources for Bulgaria is important. If we have our own deposits – even better. However, I am willing to argue quite a bit about how and when the divestment will actually happen.
Shell will search and explore between 4 and 5 years in the Silistar field. If sufficient quantities of gas are discovered, it will take another 10 years to reach its actual use by the Bulgarian economy and households. The other global giant, Total, will make its first drilling in the Khan Asparuh field this year. That is, if our great expectations come true, we may actually have our own source of gas only after the distant 2030. Hopefully, the results from “Silistar” and “Khan Asparuh” are not like those from the “Koinare” deposit near Deventsi. For him, in 2012, with the same enthusiasm, they promised us that there are reserves of more than 5 billion cubic meters, and natural gas from there will be used already in the second half of 2013.
I say this not to underestimate efforts and actions, but because in our gas policy we must be very precise and not use it for PR.
The “Balkan” gas hub has so far only been a project for media use and is periodically “filled” through the media from a variety of natural gas sources. Native gas – as we have seen, we can at best talk about such in 15-17 years. Azeri gas – because of the war in Syria and the tension in Turkey, the TAP and TANAP projects will be delayed a lot, some experts even think that they will be dropped. Liquefied gas – from a terminal in the Aegean Sea, which has not yet started construction. Russian Gas – yes, but the governments after Plamen Oresharski actually froze any actions on the South Stream project.
The truth is that, in recent years, only two governments – those of the BSP, have taken real steps to diversify gas policy. The South Stream project would diversify the route and avoid dependence on the Ukrainian route. The agreement signed during Oresharski’s government for the delivery of 1 billion cubic meters of Azeri gas from the TAP gas pipeline, which does not pass through Bulgaria, would have ensured the diversification of the sources.
The real topic that the rulers should talk about and invite the other political forces to a conversation is what should actually be done in the new geopolitical situation in order to guarantee the interest of our country. The answers are not infinite – Russian gas, which will come directly to Bulgaria, is the main option. Given that you had the pipes delivered and the ships ready to build, that you are in full technical readiness to start the project, it is incomprehensible why you refuse to protect it against external and internal factors.
Unfortunately, there is no serious conversation about diversification. We only get to official ceremonies and signings, the results of which remain in the media. As was the case with the infamous ceremony in the Council of Ministers for the renegotiation of the terms of the contracts with the two American headquarters. The new conditions have not yet entered into force, and if they do, the price of electricity will not change for the end user. Hopefully with the gas too, it won’t happen like with the electricity.
