Today, opening and managing a current account is an extremely simple, immediate and intuitive operation than in the past: new technologies such as smartphones but also as a result of policies by governments and banks that have undoubtedly favored a new diffusion. The current account represents one of the most important economic and financial instruments of all. What happens if a current account is not closed?
“I haven’t closed my checking account”, what is the risk? “Attention”
First of all, it is good to remember that a current account has not had closing costs for some years and can be requested at any time: as specified through the Bersani decree 223/2006 on free competition, it does not allow banks to develop commissions of any kind relating to when closing current accounts. Only those relating to account management, such as royalties, can be requested by the bank. The latter must provide for closure if requested within a period of 12 days, otherwise it will have to pay very high penalties, up to 64555 euros.

As we have already observed for the postal bookseven the accounts not moved for over 10 years with a minimum balance of 100 euros (defined dormant) they are subject to closure, upon notice by the bank from the bank to the account holder.
As long as an account is active, the normal management costs such as stamp duty and the various account maintenance costs are expected, which remain applicable until it is completely closed.
The bank cannot apply further charges if the account has not been moved for more than a year and if it has a (positive) balance equal to or less than 258.23 euros. Obviously, as can be easily understood, an account cannot be closed if the possible obligations such as the negative balance are not resolved first, or if the account is “blocked” for any reason.
