Amy Graham had perhaps the worst possible sporting start to the 2023 season when she was knocked down by her horse at a competition in early January at the Gold Coast Turf Club in Queensland.
The impact was so severe that it caused severe head and tooth injuries. Blood splattered and he lost several teeth.
He mentioned the star with a cheeky message
However, Graham already sees the light at the end of the tunnel.
– Luckily I’m fine, but it still hurts. Yesterday I ran out of painkillers, so I’m going to the doctor today to get more and hopefully get my work clearance back so I can compete at the weekend, he tells Dagbladet.
Graham’s trainer John Zielke explains how the brutal injury came about.
– The horse threw its head back, and then the area behind the head, between the horse’s ears, hit Amy in the face, Zielke tells the website Race Net.
Heavy bill
As if the injury itself wasn’t tragic enough, a long period of rehabilitation awaits the jockey.
She was told a dentist is asking for $20,000 for a reconstruction. In Norwegian kroner, the amount is 199,000.
Fortunately, he doesn’t have to pay the sum out of pocket.
– I’m not sure what it will be, but at least I don’t have to pay for it, because it’s covered by my job insurance. The teeth were fixed together in their natural position, but there was talk of me needing dentures.
She continues:
– I go to another surgeon to get a re-evaluation. Either way, there isn’t much that needs to be done before the wound and trauma heals, and I’ve been told it will take some time.
Destroyed by death
Unfortunately, the horse accident isn’t the first Graham has experienced in recent years.
Again in December 2021 he drowned his good friendand fellow jockey, Chris Carseta, when the two went for a swim in Australia.
– I was speechless when I realized this morning that I will never see your smile at work again. I don’t know what to try. I don’t know what to say except I’m sorry, I’m sorry I couldn’t save you, Graham said at the time.
He later clarified that he would use the death as a motivation in future competitions.
