‘I had never heard of the Magdalene laundries’ – The Irish Times

Oprah Winfrey Selects Irish Novel "Small Things Like These" for Her Latest Book Club Pick

Renowned talk show host and media mogul Oprah Winfrey has chosen a captivating Irish novella for her latest book club endeavor. The book, "Small Things Like These" by Irish author Claire Keegan, was unveiled as the inaugural selection for Winfrey’s new YouTube series "The Oprah Podcast." The selection marks a significant moment for Keegan, whose poignant story is set to reach a wider audience thanks to Winfrey’s influential platform.

"Small Things Like These," which recently received a critically acclaimed film adaptation starring Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy, tells the powerful story of Bill Furlong, a coalman grappling with a moral dilemma in 1980s Ireland. Winfrey described the book as "a beautiful Christmas story this time of the year," highlighting its heartwarming and meaningful themes.

"What resonated with me?" Winfrey shared. "First of all, read the story, and I had never heard of the Magdalene laundries. This story, which is heartwarming and meaningful, and it’s about a father trying to do the best he can for his family, and then has this decision to make…. For me to run across a story that’s based in truth, but is actually fiction, was what was really exciting to me.”

The book delves into the horrors often concealed within the walls of Magdalene laundries, institutions notorious for their mistreatment of vulnerable women in Ireland.

Winfrey’s book club selections have long been a driving force in the publishing industry, igniting a phenomenon known as "The Oprah Effect." Publishers and authors alike eagerly anticipate Winfrey’s choices, as her endorsement can catapult a book to phenomenal success.

In the past, Winfrey’s recommendations have propelled numerous books to bestseller lists, including Cormac McCarthy’s "The Road," which sold over a million copies after Winfrey’s 2007 recommendation, and Toni Morrison’s "The Bluest Eye," which saw an 800,000 bump in sales following a Winfrey feature in 2000. Keegan, humbled by Winfrey’s endorsement, expressed her gratitude: "To know that Oprah Winfrey took pleasure in reading my book is the most exquisite compliment, which will last my lifetime.”

Reacting to the profound impact of her selection, Keegan said,

“To be told that she has also recommended it for others to read and has chosen this novel for her book club is a tremendous honour. May her wonderful book club encourage people into reading for years and years to come,”

Winfrey shared a powerful line from the novel that resonated deeply with her: "Was there any point in being alive without helping one another?” Winfrey, echoing this sentiment, stated, “That is how I live my life.”

The first episode of "The Oprah Podcast," featuring Keegan’s selected novella, will be available across various platforms, including YouTube. The episode will also include a moving interview with a survivor of a Magdalene laundry, offering a firsthand account of her experience.

Partnering with Starbucks, the revived book club initiatives promises to reach a broad audience, bringing Keegan’s powerful story to life for readers worldwide.
