Jay Gorter is one of the surprising new faces in Ajax’s starting team. The goalkeeper seemed to have to play second fiddle this season, but due to an injury to Gerónimo Rulli, his place in the team is suddenly assured. Gorter was ready to leave on loan after the home match against Heracles Almelo, but was ordered to stay anyway.

It wouldn’t have made much difference if Gorter no longer played for Ajax. “In the preparation it was quite clear that I would leave on a rental basis,” says Gorter on the Ajax club channel. “I had already packed everything and was almost ready to leave. And then I had to come in due to an injury and the decision was made to keep me. It can be very strange. I haven’t been able to give it a place yet, it’s so fast The football world is so hectic.”

These have been wonderful weeks for Gorter, born and raised in Amsterdam. “All my friends are behind the goal. My whole family is in the stadium. Even when I played for Go Ahead, everyone went to Ajax. I played on Friday evenings, they went to Ajax at the weekend. I also sometimes took a European match. Being a supporter has never left me. I will always remain an Ajax supporter.”

Yet the closing post also realizes that performance must be achieved. Starting with the match against Olympique Marseille on Thursday evening. “Ajax and Marseille are two good teams,” Gorter looks ahead. “I think we can expect that both teams want to show something on this stage. I am so looking forward to that, it is indescribable. If you are such a fan and invested in Ajax, these are dreams come true.”

Classic
Next Sunday’s match brings back special memories for Gorter. “My grandfather always took me to Ajax – Feyenoord. That was our match. That was also the first match I ever attended. Those kinds of memories come back. But also the bigger memories. The third star, for example, was then I am also very young. How you cheer at that marker from Siem de Jong. That remains gold.”
