– We were told to go to the upper deck to be picked up by helicopter. There were five or six passengers in each helicopter and I think there were three helicopters working at the same time, Giedrius Didoras tells VG.

He was one of 299 passengers on board Scandic Rock Monday, when a fire broke out at 12:40.

Awakened by the fire alarm

Didoras says he was sleeping when suddenly the fire alarm went off.

– I got dressed and ran from the room to the reception. They closed the doors and told us to stay at the reception, then we smelled bad.

According to Didoras, they were at reception about 30 minutes before they were told to go up to the upper deck. He struggles to give the timeline of the incident, but says that after a while on the bridge they were told to get back on the ferry.

– There were many gathered in a small space. The toilets weren’t working so there was a bad smell. After about two hours indoors, people started getting really angry.

Didoras says the situation was sustainable for a long time, but that as the hours went by he and the others got more and more tired.

– There was no room on board. There was also no electricity on the ferry, which they said they were working on. After a few hours, the light came back on, she says.

Didoras, who lives in Brønnøysund, says they were first taken by Stena Scandica by helicopter on a new ferry that took them to Gotland, where they arrived around 11:30 pm on Monday night.

– There was a strong wind and a lot of waves, and there were a lot of them with small children who I can obviously imagine were stressed out, he says.

The fire was in the refrigerated containers on board, but the ship’s firefighters managed to put out the fire.

– We don’t know anything

Didaros, who is now in Gotland, thinks communication from Stena Line after the accident is poor. He describes it as a desperate situation, as he had to leave both his car and all his personal belongings on the ferry.

– On Tuesday morning they said we had to go by plane, but we don’t know anything. I don’t understand why it is so difficult to return to Nynäshamn. I have to go back there to get my car, she says.

Press officer Elfström apologizes if passengers believe the information has been too scarce.

– It is an extraordinary situation which is very painful. We notify our passengers on an ongoing basis. In Gotland, there are various options by plane and ferry. We are working to find the best alternatives, says Elfström.
