Jay Gorter is happy with the trust he receives from Ajax coach Maurice Steijn, he said in an interview with De Telegraaf. The 23-year-old goalkeeper may defend the Amsterdam goal this season, as first choice Gerónimo Rulli has been out of action for a long time due to an injury. “Steijn will not let me down so easily,” says Gorter.
In the interview, Gorter looks back on the past season. In the match for the Johan Cruijff Shield against PSV (5-3 loss), the Amsterdam-born closing post was allowed to start under the bar. He did not make the best impression and from then on had to settle for a reserve role under Schreuder. “That was a hard blow. But instead of feeling sorry for myself, I wanted to make a stunning comeback. I had simply messed up against PSV myself.”

In the second half of last season, Gorter was loaned out to Scottish side Aberdeen, where he worked hard to return stronger to Ajax. “What I always kept in mind in Scotland is that you are only as good as your last match. I wanted to show Steijn what I am worth. I had to build up credit. Many people at Ajax have always believed in me, which is why I was able to it makes it easier to keep my head straight.”
Gorter is therefore not afraid that he will quickly lose his starting place. While according to Voetbal International technical director Sven Mislintat is pushing for a starting place for purchase Diant Ramaj, Groter is not worried. “With Steijn I feel the confidence that I lacked with Schreuder. Of course I will have to perform. I feel like Ajax’s first goalkeeper and I really want to enjoy De Klassieker.”
