I exercised for 15 minutes a day… Amazing changes in physical strength and quality of sleep

A study found that recommending ’15 minutes of exercise a day’ to office workers can not only improve physical health but also overall well-being.

According to the academic journal Healthcare, a research team from the University of South Australia found that investing 15 minutes a day in physical activity has the effect of improving the physical activity and health of office workers.

The research team conducted the ’15 Minute Challenge’ project targeting 11,575 office workers aged 18 to 65 at 73 companies in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, and assessed the effectiveness of the challenge by analysis of data obtained from participants.

The challenge encouraged participants to do 15 minutes of physical activity every day for six weeks. They were also asked to record their physical activity, stamina, sleep quality, and mood through an app of the same name.

The results showed that 95% of participants in the 15-minute challenge met (36%) or exceeded (59%) physical activity guidelines. The average level of physical activity during the challenge period also increased by 12 minutes per day.

All health outcomes measured by the end of the program, including participants’ physical strength, energy, overall health, sleep quality, and mood, also showed significant improvement.

Physical strength was reported to improve by 14%, energy by 12%, overall health by 7.7%, sleep quality by 7.6%, and mood by 7.1%.

The research team explained, “The health-improving effects of the 15-minute challenge demonstrate the potential of workplace wellness programs to break sedentary habits and promote healthier, more active lifestyles.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults (18 to 64 years of age) engage in at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or at least 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week.

“We’ve shown that just 15 minutes of physical activity a day can make a huge difference to people’s health and well-being,” said Dr Ben Singh, a member of the research team at the University of South Australia. “The 15-minute goal is an accessible starting point, especially for people who have been leading a sedentary lifestyle for a long time.
