Ahmadinejad, a populist politician, is one of many candidates barred from running by the Guardian Council and legal experts.
Ebrahim Raisi, a hardline cleric who serves as Iran’s head of the judiciary is a close ally of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran’s Interior Ministry said Raisi’s vote had an unwavering lead in the 13th presidential election after 90 percent of the votes had been counted. Raisi will replace President Hassan Rouhani, who has been in power for two terms.
Raisi received more than 17.8 million of the 28.6 million votes counted. But Iranian officials did not release the turnout figures for Friday’s election.
Three of the four presidential candidates admitted defeat to Raisi.
Presidential candidate Mohsen Rezaei, the former commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), received more than 3.3 million votes.
