The decline in business activity and local restrictions imposed by the authorities of various countries to combat the coronavirus have hit many sectors of the economy, including the energy sector.

According to the International Energy Agency, as of June 2020, energy consumption in the world lagged behind last year’s indicators by 10%, only in August it began to gradually level out. The power system in Russia went through the peak months of the crisis relatively calmly: in April, consumers, taking into account isolated energy regions of the country, chose 84.3 billion kWh of energy (minus 2.8% by April 2019), in May – 77.6 billion kWh (minus 5.3%), in June – 74.1 billion kWh (minus 5.9%). By September, the rate of decline in consumption became minimal.
