You are coming to play in Varaire, in a festival much more modest than others where you perform. How do you choose your dates?
I was in Bordeaux not long ago. I don’t care about going to big or small cities, singing in big festivals or small ones. I go to play where the public asks me, where my reggae is appreciated. In a way I go where my music takes me… And, I like coming to France, the French public is wonderful. They have a really special connection with my music, they receive it well.
You are one of the few Italian reggae singers, is that what makes you different?
No, because I am a worker, I never stop. I am someone who is very active artistically speaking. I spend a lot of time in the studio, I record all my albums in Jamaica. And, I even work on tour! It is the time for me to make music and to be inspired by the people and places where I stop. I really like discovering other styles and contaminating my music with influences from all over the world. And, I really like South America: the music of Brazil and Argentina for example has an energy, powerful, combative. And then, I speak Spanish!
What is your connection to Jamaica?
I come back to this country, to write, compose and record. I have lived here for 28 years now, I have found love, music and spirituality there. You could say that I grew up in Jamaica. In my native Italy, I only come back for concerts now.
Why did you choose the name Destiny for your latest album?
Because we are all meant for something. When you look at the cover of my album, there is my childhood face, and when you turn it over, there is my present face. All this to say that I think I was always meant to make music and to be where I am now. This album is a bit like realizing my musical journey.
Last question. Do you remember the first time you sang?
Yes, I was five years old and I put on a show in the building for my neighbors. And, for free, of course!
