Swedish cross-country stars went high before the start of the season, but Therese Johaug showed where it matters most: in the ski track.

– I do not really care much about it. It just tickled me more, and made me extra motivated to good skiing. They get to stand for what they say, Johaug says to VG at the digital press conference after Sunday’s final hunt start in Ruka.

In the days leading up to the start of the season in the Finnish forests, the Swedes have gone high and proclaimed a change of throne in women’s cross-country skiing.

Therese Johaug, for her part, has contributed a little to this by putting pressure on her Swedish challengers – among them Frida Karlsson, who did not have a nice Sunday in Ruka:

In the track, however, there was a class difference between Johaug and the rest. On Saturday she won by 22 seconds in the ten kilometer classic, on Sunday she finished by winning by a full 47 seconds ahead of the next woman.

The 31-year-old was then asked if she thinks the Swedes will be more careful in the language after this weekend’s show of power. She pulls a little on it.

– They can go fast, so I will never say never, but I envision good skiing and rising form going forward, says Johaug.

Towards the end of the final hunt start, it became dramatic for the Swedish hunters. Linn Svahn and Maja Dahlqvist went to the ground, and the former literally verbally hammered loose on teammate Ebba Andersson after the accident:

– I did not get anything with me, so I really have no comment. It is boring that they destroy for each other, says Johaug.

– How was the mood among the Swedes after the finish? asks Dagsavisen.

– I think they were very frustrated. At least I saw some Swedes who went quickly out of the target area, Johaug replied.

Expressen commentator Tomas Pettersson, for his part, went out in his own newspaper and thought that Therese Johaug’s “mental game” was seen through after her clear victory in the first distance race.

– Last year I got refs for being too careful, so now I thought I should put some pressure on her (Frida Karlsson), Johaug said to that.
