Roger Federer, 20 times Major Slam champion, has been fined twice in Grand Slam Majors, and in two decades. The Swiss was penalized for swearing against Juan Martin del Potro in that epic 2009 US Open final, which was also the first game he has lost in New York since 2003.
Roger was also fined $ 3,000 for using audible obscenity during the 2020 Australian Open quarterfinal third set against Tennys Sandgren.
In what has been one of the most exciting games of the entire season, Roger beat Tennys 6-3, 2-6, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3, in three hours and 31 minutes, in order to qualify for its 15th semi-final in Melbourne and after rejecting no less than seven match points!
The Swiss star received a code violation when a linesman reported it to chair umpire Marijana Veljovic, who then issued the warning. Federer won the first set before losing ground in the second.
He had to contend with a groin injury and playing well below his usual level in the third set before benefiting from a medical time out. It was then that, frustrated, the Swiss said a few bad words and received a warning from Veljovic.
The 20-time Major champion spent time chatting with the judge, and then pursued the justifications with her during the break between games.
Federer fined at OA 2020
When the painkillers started working, Federer recovered enough in set number four to stay in touch with Tennys and extend his chances.
Roger thus saved seven match points in the tenth game and 3-6 in the tie-break to achieve an almost impossible task and force a 5th set. With the momentum on his side, the Swiss took the win and made a wonderful comeback like the one achieved in Cincinnati 2003 against world number 114 Scott Draper.
“She speaks multiple languages, didn’t know that. Next time I’m going to check for the linesmen. Honestly, I was frustrated at one point for more, I don’t know, 3pm, I think c ‘is normal.
I found it a bit hard; it’s not like I’m known to toss words and the like. It’s not like the whole stadium heard it either. But no problem, I will accept it, “said Roger Federer.
