New York Attorney General Letitia James, who has long been outspoken in her defense of abortion rights, publicly revealed Tuesday that she herself had an abortion nearly two decades ago.
Pregnant as a newly elected New York City Council member, “I chose to have an abortion,” James told protesters who gathered in Manhattan to denounce a draft US Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade sentence that legalized the constitutional right to abortion nationwide.
James, a Democrat, said she is “unapologetic” for her decision.
“I had just been elected and I was faced with the decision to have an abortion or not, and I thought about having an abortion,” she said. “I proudly entered Planned Parenthood And I don’t apologize to anyone.”
James, 63, won a City Council race in 2003 to start her political career, then served as the city’s elected ombudsman and then attorney general since 2018. Last year, she briefly ran in the 2022 race. for governor before retiring; she now she is seeking re-election in November.
James has proposed a New York fund to help provide abortions to women who cannot access the procedures in their own states, and has filed or joined other attorneys general in filing friend-of-the-court briefs arguing against it. some restrictions on abortion in other states.
“We will not back down,” he told protesters on Tuesday. “No Supreme Court judge can dictate to me or you how to use your body.”
