Foreign media, including the BBC, reported that police officers rioted on the 26th (local time) as a series of police officers were killed by criminal gangs in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti.
The rioting police are claiming that the government is not doing anything about the criminal gang problem. Anger exploded as seven police officers were killed by criminal gangs the day before. More recently, two people were killed at a police station in a village in northern Haiti and four officers were executed on the street.
The Haitian Police Union said 14 people had been killed in various gang attacks on police stations since the beginning of the year. 78 police officers have been reported dead since Henry took office last year.
More than 100 police officers and citizens blocked the streets, burned tires and damaged vehicles.
Local media reported that several police officers broke down the entrance to the prime minister’s residence and tried to enter Haiti International Airport.
Protesters went to Haiti Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s official residence, but found it empty. Prime Minister Henry had just finished a diplomatic tour in Argentina, but he had not yet returned to his official residence. Protesters moved to Port-au-Prince Airport, where Prime Minister Henry arrived, and broke windows to try to enter the airport. However, Prime Minister Henry got out of the airport safely.
Haiti has been experiencing extreme security in recent months due to gang warfare. Haitian media are reporting that kidnappings have increased noticeably in Haiti since the beginning of this year.
Port-au-Prince and other cities have been grappling with extreme gang warfare for months, and Haitian media reported a marked increase in kidnappings in Haiti since the beginning of the year. In Haiti, there was one kidnapping every six hours last year.
Haiti’s criminal organizations are crossing the line, taking over fuel storage at the port of Proto-Prince and disrupting food and medicine distribution. These gangs are said to control about 60% of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and surrounding areas.
