Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez explained how he managed to improve his form towards the end of the season.
Despite signing a contract until 2024, the Mexican’s future remained unclear throughout the second half of the season, when he showed extremely unstable results. The turning point for Perez was the Qatar Grand Prix, during which he finished tenth, more than 80 seconds behind his teammate. That day, Max Verstappen clinched the championship with six races to spare.
To the question of the British Autosportwhy Perez waited until Qatar to take action and brainstorm with the team, he replied: “Because Qatar was truly the worst weekend in a long time. Possibly my worst weekend of my entire career. It was so bad that I thought, “I can’t be that bad, something is going on.”
With all these races in a row, sometimes there is not enough time to really live and process it. I felt like we needed to take some time and make sure we understood what direction we needed to go. We had a flaw in the car’s setup that we experimented with step after step and we just couldn’t get over it. But once we got over it, we realized a lot.”
