I campaigned for doubling the amount from 11 to 22 lei for meals in hospitals. It seemed normal to me that Romanian patients would receive the same amount, at least the same as Ukrainian refugees

Health Minister Alexandru Rafila says he has campaigned to increase the amount allocated for the patient table in Romania, from 11 lei to 22 lei, just as they received refugees from Ukraine. Rafila added that it is very difficult for the Ministry of Health to check in each of the country’s 400 hospitals whether 22 lei are actually spent on patients’ meals, news.ro reports.

Appearing on the show at Antena3, Alexandru Rafila said that out of 400 hospitals in Romania, 67 are under the direct authority of the Ministry of Health.

“As far as meals in hospitals are concerned, I have known the example of Bistrita because I have been to Bistrita two or three times, I have seen the hospital, it is excellent not only from the point of view of the attention given to patients, but also from the point of view of the medical assistance provided there. They have a very, very good manager and following the legal procedures for that manager is sacred. There are 400 hospitals in the country, the Ministry of Health has about 67, the rest about 330 are at the local authorities, it is they who take care of these hospitals. It is not an excuse, it is a statistic. The Supervisory Body of the Minister of Health can go to specific situations and goes a lot on specific situations that do not necessarily refer to the mass of patients, refers to many aspects related to the violation of the law and you have to go to various referrals. We can do these checks with the health inspection at the level of each county, not at the level of the Ministry of Health. Speaking of the meal, the health inspectorate can check whether the hygienic conditions relating to the provision of the meal are respected “, said Rafila, according to news.ro

He also claimed to have campaigned to double the amount for patients’ meals.

“I campaigned for the doubling of the amount from 11 lei to 22 lei in hospitals and this coincided with the time when the meal allowance was discussed for Ukrainian refugees in Romania, who received the same amount. And it seemed normal to me that Romanian patients would receive at least the same amount as Ukrainian refugees. The fact that there are probably thefts, because I can’t qualify them otherwise, if the 22 lei are not used for the meal and are for something else, when we can establish that the contracts are fraudulent or the supplier is not fulfilling its contractual obligations, but it is impossible for me to think of a solution for 400 hospitals. The solution will not come overnight, but I will think about it, “he said Rafila, quoted by news.ro.
