– I ask. For some asshole

Kebab gulls are a negative slang term in Tromsø for seagulls (eastern) that “invade” the city center streets in search of food scraps people throw away.

Two weeks ago, a woman (26) on her way home from work witnessed one of Tromsø’s seagulls being caught and force-fed in Kirkeparken in the center.

It was only around 19 in full daylight on a Friday.

Now the police animal crime unit will have a chat with two young men about animal abuse, and ask for tips:

“A couple of weeks ago, the police received a video of a man abusing a seagull in Kirkeparken. The video shows the man holding the seagull and stuffing food down its throat “, the police write on their Facebook page.

Around 20 people were in the park when it happened. The woman on her way home from work sat ten meters away and filmed.

It is she herself who has added commentary text to the video Dagbladet has gained access to: «Æ spyr. For some asshole ».

Opens his beak and pushes down food

She tells how she herself experienced the situation in Kirkeparken on Friday 2 July:

– I was sitting with a book. Then come two guys between 20 and 30 years old, small and with a bag of some beer. I heard that they talked like that approx. local dialect, I did not know them, she tells Dagbladet.

– They scattered pieces of bread and food on the ground, obviously to attract seagulls. Then he gets one hold of one of them, holds it with one hand, and opens his beak and presses the food down the throat of the bird with the other, she says and continues:

– And the other guy films and smiles.

Panicked, horrible screams

– How did the bird react in the vise?

There was a panicked, horrible scream. This was animal abuse, the woman says after the police now call for tips about the two men.

It lasted five to six minutes. The bird got away when he who was holding and forcibly had to change roofs.

The woman left the park and called the police directly on the way home. She was not there when the police patrol arrived. It was not the two wanted men either.

Ugly comments

The video created a lot of “ugly” attention when the story of the forced feeding became known through the newspaper Nordlys two days later. The woman got “skin full” in the comment fields for not having contacted the police.

– That was exactly what I did. But it did not appear in the newspaper, says the woman, who will therefore be anonymous this time.

The animal protection organization NOAH also reported the case to the police the day after it became known through Nordlys.

– You estimate that there were around 20 people in the park when it happened. How do you react to no one intervening?

– For my own, I work with mental health. That way, I have learned extra lessons about not provoking drunk people I do not know. So my spinal reflex was to contact the police directly.

– Has always been here

– What is your relationship with seagulls, also called kebab gulls, in Tromsø city?

– I have always lived in Tromsø, and am used to them always being here. It is quite possible that there are several of them in the city now. They nest here.

– For as long as I can remember, it has been forbidden to damage or tear down nests. And some of the seagull species are protected, including the crutch.

– No, what happened in the park is not okay. It is animal cruelty, the eyewitness says firmly.
