Two Romanian journalists asked French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday how Russia should be treated and what place the Kremlin could have on the international stage, reminding the French head of state that he said “Russia should not be humiliated.”
President Macron told reporters that France had condemned Russia from the outset, saying it was “shocking that there was a form of verbal escalation”.
“I strongly condemn this war in all international structures and have taken action. The difficulty, at the present time, which I have discussed at length with President Iohannis is that, of course, we are denouncing this situation, sanctioning Russia, supporting the Ukrainians to fight, but to be lucid, to find that we are not launching into a war, we are not at war with Russia. So the only way out, the only possible solution to the conflict, is either a military victory for Ukraine or a discussion at some point, because it is the only solution that will allow an agreement between Ukraine and Russia. So hold on – it’s a matter of common sense. I am shocked to see that there is a form of verbal escalation, without drawing the consequences of these statements.
