/ world today news/ “I am proud that our contemporary films are increasingly nominated for Oscars in the special selection for foreign language films.”
This was stated by the People’s Representative from the PG of BSP LEFT BULGARIA Stefan Danailov during the opening of an exhibition in the National Assembly on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Bulgarian cinema. “The awards that Bulgarian films receive at prestigious major festivals in Europe and the world are well deserved. The biggest award for Bulgarian filmmakers is the great recognition of UNESCO, which titles the Bulgarian capital “Sofia – creative city of cinema”, he added.
Stefan Danailov believes that all artists are in debt to film production and film distribution in the country. He did not hide that the figures of this debt are shocking. “While in the 80s of the 20th century, there were over 3,000 cinemas in our country, today there are less than 40 cinemas, and they are gathered in malls in only 10 regional cities. Until 1999 Bulgaria used to produce up to 32 full-length Bulgarian films a year, and today we manage to complete up to 6-8 films a year”, explained the representative. He recalled that according to the “History of World Cinema” by the great French film critic Georges Sadoul, almost until the end of the 90s of the 20th century, Bulgaria was among the countries with the most developed cinema network and the largest number of moviegoers in Europe.
As the chairman of the Initiative Committee for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Bulgarian cinema, Stefan Danailov proudly recalled that only 2 years after the first screening by the Lumiere brothers in the basement of the Parisian “Grand Cafe”, where in 1895 “the moving photographs”, in small Bulgaria – in the city of Ruse, in the beer hall of Marin Cholakovna, on 27.02.1897, the world’s sixth screening of this miracle called cinema took place. According to him, the films shown “Welcoming the train”, “The exit of the workers from the factories” and “The flying watering can” impressed the Bulgarians so much that only 18 years after that day, they themselves produced the first Bulgarian film “A Bulgarian is a gallant”. The national representative said that he was introduced to the capital’s “Modern Cinema” on “Maria Luiza” Boulevard by its creator – the innovator-actor and director Vasil Gendov, deservedly called “the father of Bulgarian cinema”. “At the cost of a lot of effort and personal sacrifices, this creator-dreamer created a series of 11 feature films, as well as the first talking film – “The Rebellion of the Slaves” for Vasil Levski”, he added.
