The film version of Jaroslav Kalfar’s book Cosmonaut from Bohemia takes on a clear form. The main role will be played by actor and comedian Adam Sandler. Filming for the streaming giant Netflix is set to begin in the first months of next year.
In the film, Sandler becomes the hero of Jakub Procházka, who is the only one to fly on a mission to a mysterious cloud between Earth and Venus – and in the meantime, his life on his home planet is falling apart. According to Kalfar, the actor, known from a number of comedies but also prized films such as Drunk with Love or last year’s drama Gem, joined the project after he became interested in the original book.
It is not the only known name that the project can boast of. The director is to take over Johan Renck, who became famous on the HBO television series Chernobyl, one of the producers is another acting star Channing Tatum.
The cast is part of a $ 250 million deal that Adam Sandler and streaming giant Netflix closed in 2014 and renewed earlier this year.
Not to mention that, thanks to him, he became the ninth best-earning actor. At the same time, Sandler begins to deviate from comedic roles: the aforementioned Gem (originally Uncut Gems) finally brought him other nominations than for the worst actor.
Kalfař himself is also involved in the implementation of Sandler’s new project. “After the Free Association bought the rights to the book from me and started working on the script, I consulted a lot with the producers and the screenwriter,” says a member of our 30 under 30 ranking.
“The work on the screenplay took about a year and a half, now the main word will belong to the director and the producers,” says Kalfař, adding that he is enthusiastic about the selection of the director and the lead actor.
Kalfař, who has lived in New York for 15 years and in 2018 reached the ranking of 30 under 30, published his first book in English in 2017, the book was published in Czech the same year.
