Hyundai works not only on the development of cars that can be driven on the roads of our Earth, but also on other planets. The car company is working on a self-propelled vehicle that could operate on the surface of the moon in the future.
The specific name of the project is not yet known, but it is in the development stage, and the current goals are to create the first prototype model. Hyundai itself is developing the autonomous driving technology design, engine, wheels, suspension system, as well as part of the charging system, developed together with its subsidiary Kia. An additional project involved a company that deals with trains and development of defense equipment on a daily basis.
Once the propulsion system is complete, the next focus point will be the addition of scientific equipment, as the rover will be able to carry up to 70kg of cargo, as well as participate in various tasks. For example, take samples of the lunar surface. In addition to this, it will be necessary to think about self-propelled thermal management and radiation shields.
The self-propelled vehicle created by Hyundai could be ready in the second half of 2024, when it will be sent to the South Pole for tests before going to the moon. If all goes well, the actual flight of a new model could take place in 2027, but this has not yet been confirmed. Other car brands have also dabbled in self-driving cars, such as Toyota, General Motors and Nissan.
