Hyundai Staria Lounge, the van set up as a camper

The elegant vehicle, winner of awards for its design, launched in South Korea in versions for 4 or 11 passengers. With many useful solutions

Maurizio Bertera

It is becoming almost normal to camperize a mini van: it is a trend, but also the certainty of a good response on the market. And the manufacturers do not skimp on ideas: this is the case of Hyundai which has tested the elegant van Staria, already winner of the Red Dot Award for design and other events related to style. Launched last year in multiple configurations from two to eleven seats (and with a transport variant) with the name Load and not for sale in Italy, it is now shown on the outdoor side through the Lounge Camper variant. Presented in South Korea and 5,253 mm long, the minivan is available in Camper 4 and Camper 11 versions, depending on the number of seats. Hyundai’s goal is clear, at least in that country: to battle the Volkswagen Transporter California and the Mercedes-Benz V-Class Marco Polo.

EXTRA MATTRESS

In both cases the rear seats fold flat, creating a bed that can comfortably accommodate two adults, while on the pop-up roof there is an extra double mattress for two more people. But if on the Camper 11 the rear part is in fact used only as a sleeping area, on the Camper 4 version (obviously the most attractive for our market) there is an entire kitchen module on the left side. Module consisting of a 36-liter refrigerator, a sink, a 70-liter water tank, a 40-liter waste tank, a detachable shower head, a folding table, and several storage compartments. All functions can be controlled from a foldable 12.1 “touchscreen.

TURBODIESEL

The external equipment includes a retractable awning with integrated LED, a sliding table outside the tailgate, two folding chairs, a mosquito net for the rear door and an external power supply. It should be noted that despite the ‘extra pieces’, the total height of the vehicle is 2,095 mm. Under the hood is the 2.2-liter CRDi turbodiesel that develops 177 hp and 430 Nm of torque. Engine coupled to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The camper van of the Korean house is both front-wheel and four-wheel drive. In South Korea, prices for the Hyundai Staria Lounge Camper start at just over € 37,000 for the 11-seater and € 51,356 for the four-seater. The hope remains to see him come to us …
