Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia: Driving Force for Indonesian Electric Car Exports

NATIONAL INFO – Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan hopes that PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia’s (HMMI) investment can become a driving force for Indonesian electric car exports to the world. This was conveyed by the Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan when visiting PT HMMI on Tuesday 11 July 2023 in Cikarang, Bekasi Regency, West Java.

“Hopefully, Hyundai can become the driving force for Indonesian electric cars and the driving force for electric car exports from Indonesia to the world,” said Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan.

The Ministry of Trade, he continued, supports PT HMMI’s efforts which are currently not only successful in meeting domestic demand in the automotive sector, but also exporting products produced in Indonesia to partner countries.

The Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan also encouraged PT HMMI to be able to continue its better performance, provide the best contribution while still prioritizing partnerships with local entrepreneurs (especially MSMEs), optimizing the value of the Domestic Component Level (TKDN), and of course with support from the government, both local governments as well as the central government.

“Hopefully we can continue to synergize and work together to create a healthy and competitive industry in the global market,” he said.

President of the Hyundai Motor Asean Headquarter, Youngtack Lee said, more than 50 percent of Hyundai’s factory production in Indonesia has been exported to foreign countries. “More than 50 percent of Indonesian factory production has been exported to 78 countries around the world to contribute to world car exports. We ask for your support so that the Hyundai Motor Company can lead the automotive industry in ASEAN,” he said.

According to Lee, in May 2023 the groundbreaking for the electric vehicle battery pack factory was laid. Meanwhile, in September 2021, Hyundai and LG Energy Solution established a JV (HLI Green Power) electric vehicle battery, which is currently under construction.

“The goal is to accelerate the creation of an electric vehicle ecosystem and encourage Indonesian factories to become electric vehicle production centers in ASEAN,” said Lee.

The Ioniq 5 car was launched in March 2022 and is the first electric car in Indonesia to localize.
