The Hyundai Mobis company, part of the Hyundai concern, has announced that a large-scale agreement has been concluded with the Volkswagen concern, which provides for the supply of electric car parts to the German car manufacturer.
The contract was concluded specifically for electric car battery systems. Hyundai Mobis describes it as a complete product that includes a battery pack, a control system, as well as other necessary parts to ensure safe and efficient operation when the system is installed in an electric car.
This system will be used in Volkswagen’s next-generation electric car platform, and Hyundai Mobis will build its own factory in Spain, where the production of the systems will take place. The reason is quite simple – thus Hyundai will be closer to its customer Volkswagen.
More details are not yet available, but from the available information we can draw conclusions that these batteries could be intended for the mass-market electric cars of the Volkswagen concern, namely the Volkswagen ID.2 and related Škoda/Cupra models. These cars are planned with a starting price of around 25 thousand euros, but their production is planned specifically in Spain.
Such a move once again underlines Volkswagen’s serious problems in the technical development of electric cars – Audi has agreed with the Chinese manufacturer SAIC on the purchase of an electric car platform, because VW’s technical solutions are outdated and Audi is losing competition with Chinese manufacturers. The Volkswagen brand has bought a 5% share of Xpeng, now it is following the purchase of batteries from competitors.
