- Proactively respond to the increasing trend in vehicle safety by ensuring certification in Europe that leads global standards
- Establishment of a dedicated cybersecurity organization and a cybersecurity system to continuously strengthen security management for the “smartphone on wheels” in vehicles
SEOUL, South Korea, Sept. 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Hyundai Mobis (KRX: 012330) has become the first Asian automotive supplier to receive cybersecurity certification in Europe, where the company is a leader in global automotive security standards. Cybersecurity has become a critical area as the amount of software in vehicles increases and custom data processing becomes more important. Additionally, vehicle safety regulations are tightening in various countries, making cybersecurity certifications a key competitive advantage for global products and contracts.
On the 26th, Hyundai Mobis announced that it held a cybersecurity certification ceremony at its technology research center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, in the presence of representatives from the European Automotive Manufacturing and Supply Association (ENX). The European Automotive Manufacturing and Supply Association includes global European automotive manufacturers and suppliers such as Daimler, Volkswagen, BMW and Bosch and oversees Vehicle Cyber Security (VCS) certifications. Certification by this association is considered extremely credible and has become a mandatory condition for customers of global automakers from Europe when ordering auto parts.
In the automotive industry, cybersecurity is about protecting vehicle systems and networks with reliable security technologies to respond to risks such as external hacker attacks and prevent the loss of users’ personal data. With the increasing application of various IT functions in new vehicles and the advent of the era of software-controlled vehicles (SDV), the cybersecurity response capabilities of global automotive manufacturers and suppliers are becoming increasingly important.
The VCS certification obtained by Hyundai Mobis means that the main products developed and produced by Hyundai Mobis comply with European cybersecurity regulations for the automotive industry and that the company has put in place the necessary business procedures and systems. The certification covers all areas from product design, evaluation, quality and production to post-production management. Hyundai Mobis has responded quickly to the global trend of tightening automotive safety regulations and standards by becoming the first Asian company to achieve European certification.
With this certification, Hyundai Mobis is expected to enhance its global contract competitiveness based on its outstanding automotive cybersecurity capabilities and reliability. Company officials were reported to have shown keen interest in Hyundai Mobis after proactively obtaining cybersecurity certification while responding to orders from European automakers recently. Europe has mandated cybersecurity certification for all vehicles entering the market from July this year.
Since 2020, Hyundai Mobis has established its own cybersecurity organization and further developed its cybersecurity management system (CSMS). By continuously improving vehicle safety features that comply with global regulations and standards for user safety, Hyundai Mobis has achieved this certification.
Cheon Jae-seung, head of Hyundai Mobis FTCI (Future Convergence Technology Institute), said: “In the automotive industry of the future, often referred to as a ‘smartphone on wheels’, the importance of cybersecurity is increasing. We will improve our capabilities to respond efficiently not only to European regulations and standards, but also to those of other regions.”
