Hyundai Kona Electric vs. Hybrid: Review and Comparison with Jānis Kaudzi

Electric or hybrid? Hyundai electric car owner meets the new Kona. The new Hyundai Kona is available as a 100% electric car or a petrol hybrid. We invited Jānis Kaudzi, an entrepreneur, owner of the previous generation Kona Electric, to the practical test of the new Hyundai Kona.

The crossover has a relatively radical design, Seamless Horizon lights, much larger dimensions and, of course, an automatic transmission. Following the example of the Ioniq 5, its lever is located on the steering column, making room for a myriad of physical buttons and keys. In the era of ubiquitous touchscreen displays, this looks like a real break with the tide.
Depending on the size of the battery, the new Kona Electric has a range of 377 to 514 km. Engine power is 156 or 217 horsepower, respectively. Although the car is full of buttons like an airplane cockpit, driving and secondary information is displayed on connected virtual screens. With a more advanced instrument panel, the new Kona now offers features and information that were previously only available in more expensive and larger Hyundai models. Jānis expects economy, good ergonomics and an adaptive cruise control system from any car. Electric Kona has it all. However, even the cheapest Kona Electric costs 39,990 euros – nine thousand more than the equally spacey Kona hybrid. This one costs 37,990 because it is equipped with N Line. Jānis likes the red interior details and the dark ceiling – but what about the dynamics? The 1.6-liter engine provides only 141 hp. That’s okay, let’s use the driving modes! N Line is the highest equipment of Hyundai Kona, and we must admit that it is in this uniform that the crossover looks best. The equipment is also wider than usual in cars of this class.
Although the Kona Hybrid is not a zero-emissions car, it is still quite economical at 5 liters per 100 km or 105 g of CO2 per km. Skandi Motors also offers it in the special First Edition package. From a practical point of view, future Kona users will be pleased with a significantly larger trunk – the weak point of the old model, folding relaxation seats and a power to grid system for an electric car, which allows powering up to 3.5 kW of powerful consumers. In short, with the new Kona Electric you will not only be able to drive, but also make tea!
