Batik on cloth media may be common. It’s a different story if batik motifs adorn a car.
Batik patterned cars are not something new. But so far there has never been an electric car decorated with batik motifs until the end Hyundai make it.
On the first day of GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2023, Thursday (10/8/2023), Hyundai introduced the prototype version of the Ioniq 5 Indonesian Batik.

“Today marks a significant new milestone because we will see an extraordinary cultural and technological vision,” said President Director of PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia Woojune Cha in his remarks.

Furthermore, he said Ioniq 5 Indonesian Batik was here to celebrate 50 years of bilateral relations between Indonesia and South Korea.
Indonesia is represented by batik as a cultural heritage, while Korea is represented by its technological advances.

“This car shows the harmony of collaboration that celebrates Indonesian culture, while demonstrating Hyundai’s vision of progress for humanity,” said Woojune Cha.
In a promo video that was shown at the launch event, Hyundai officials met Asti Surya Astuti, a batik expert who is also the curator of collections for Danar Hadi’s exports.

They were then introduced to various batik techniques and motifs. The choice then fell on the kawung motif.
Asti Surya Astuti explained that the kawung motif is a stylization of the fro fruit. “Symbolizes perfection and purity,” said Asti.
The kawung motif then adorns the exterior such as the hood, left and right sides, even the interior.
The appearance is simple and minimalist, so it blends with the futuristic design of the Ioniq 5. Once again proven, the relevance of batik with the times.
