BORN TO MAKE FUN – Hyundai’s N sports division was founded in 2017 with the goal of creating cars that are powerful and fun to drive. First came the compact i30 N, in hatchback and fastback versions, followed by the Veloster N, not imported into Italy. Now it’s the turn of the third model: it’s the utility car Hyundai i20 N, sports version of the new i20 and rival of other famous high-performance cars, those known with the English expression hot hatch, namely the Ford Fiesta ST and Mini Cooper JCW. The i20 N will hit the market from spring 2021.
SO MUCH GRIT – The Hyundai i20 N expresses dynamism from the first glance, thanks to the 18 “wheels, the 1 cm lowered suspension and the new spoiler in the lower part of the front fascia, but there are also more pronounced sills and a large rear wing, which is inspired by to that of the rally i20. At the rear, the specific fascia can be seen, which integrates the air extractor, the oval exhaust and glossy black friezes. The taillights, joined by a horizontal frieze, are darker than the other i20s. In addition, the look of the i20 N is made even more distinctive by the tomato red exterior decorations.
DYNAMIC INSIDE – Slight changes to the interior of the Hyundai i20 N: there are sports seats, with integrated headrests and pronounced side bolsters, to better hold the body in curves at the limit, but also metal pedals and a specific steering wheel, with buttons to quickly manage some driving settings. In addition, the dashboard screen displays useful information for sporty driving, such as the engine oil temperature and the best time to change gear. The passenger compartment is also embellished with blue friezes which, together with red, is the color of the Hyundai N.
THAT PEPERINO – The Hyundai i20 N is powered by a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine from the Gamma 2 family: it has 204 HP of power and 275 Nm of torque. Thanks to the weight of 1,190 kg, the little Korean reaches a maximum speed of 230 km / h and the time of 6.7 seconds to reach 100 km / h from a standing start. There Hyundai i20 N it has front-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual gearbox, optimized for sporty driving: it has been reinforced and equipped with specific calibrations. There is also the limited slip front differential, useful in tighter corners, when the grip of the inner wheel improves on the curve.
REVISED SET-UP – To improve driving behavior at the limit, the Hyundai i20 N it has a specific set-up: at the front, the suspension struts, the anti-roll bar, the springs and the shock absorbers change, as well as the camber of the wheels (it is the inclination with respect to their vertical axis); at the rear, the torsion bar suspension scheme has been updated to increase stiffness. In addition, the steering is more direct and the brake discs are wider than 4 cm, thus improving the responsiveness to pedal pressure and resistance to fatigue.
TAILORED CHARACTER – Through the electronics, the driver can customize the road behavior of the Hyundai i20 N: it is possible to choose between five driving programs, each of which varies the response of the engine, the stability control, the sound of the exhaust and the responsiveness of the steering. It starts from Normal, for daily journeys, and arrives at N for driving to the limit, passing through the Eco, Sport and N Custom, customizable by the driver. Then there is the Rev Matching system, which can be activated by the driver, which gives a “shot” of the accelerator when downshifting to facilitate engagement of the lower gear.
