Hyundai has a solution, it wants to produce its own chips

The worldwide shortage of semiconductors was partly caused by the growing demand for laptops and other electronic products during the pandemic.

This year, some production lines around the world were closed because of it. Hyundai therefore suspended production in Korea in April. According to global operations director José Muňoz, the worst period in terms of chips was in August and September.

“The chip industry is reacting very, very quickly,” Muňoz said, adding that their manufacturer Intel is investing a lot of money in capacity expansion. “But we want to be able to develop our own chips in the group so that we are a little less dependent,” he continued.

“It takes a lot of time and investment, but we are working on it,” he added.

In November 2008, the carmaker Hyundai officially started serial production of passenger cars in Nošovice in the Frýdek-Místek region. The local factory is the only Hyundai production plant in the European Union, producing up to 1,400 cars a day. In December 2007, the Kia subsidiary started serial production of passenger cars near Žilina, Slovakia.
