The Korean car manufacturer Hyundai has announced the official parameters for the electric version of the new generation Kona model, while the company’s management expects this model to be a bestseller – Michael Cole, the head of Hyundai’s European structural unit, said that he thinks the electric Kona of the 2024 model will make up 60% of all sold cars in the Kona model line. .
This would be a huge increase – data shows that currently the electric version accounts for around 40% of all Kona units sold, including versions with an internal combustion engine. Last year, 41,448 Kona Electric units were sold in Europe, which was the ninth best result among all electric cars.
The car manufacturer informs that the new generation model has improved aerodynamics – the coefficient of air resistance for the new model is 0.27Cd, while it was 0.29Cd for the previous car. Hyundai chose to create a completely different Kona design from the IONIQ model line. Technically, the new generation electric Kona is also different from the IONIQ models.
If the current IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 use the modern E-GMP platform with an 800V battery system, the new Kona is built on the old K3 platform, which was also used in the previous model. This car uses a 400V battery system. In practice, this means the Kona will charge slower than the IONIQ models.
In the standard configuration, the car will be equipped with a 48.4kWh battery and a 154 horsepower electric motor. In the WLTP cycle, this version is capable of 342 kilometers. There is also a “long-range” version with a 65.4kWh battery that provides 490 kilometers in the WLTP cycle and also a more powerful electric motor – 214 horsepower. In both cases, they are front-wheel drive cars.
