Hyundai and Kia Recall 3.4 Million Cars in the US Market Over ABS Fire Risk

South Korean automotive companies Hyundai and Kia are proceeding to recall nearly 3.4 million cars sold in the US market to replace an anti-lock braking system (ABS) fuse in the vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the American road safety agency, the ABS of the cars in question can cause a short circuit and consequently fires: for this reason Hyundai and Kia have also told the owners of the cars to park them outside and away from buildings while waiting for repairs. They also reassured that there are no risks in driving the cars.

The recall affects vehicles sold between 2010 and 2019, including the Hyundai Santa Fe SUV and the Kia Sorento SUV. The dealers of the two companies will replace the fuses and put in new ones that remedy the ABS problems at no cost to the car owners. They will do so starting November 14th for Kia and November 21st for Hyundai. There were 53 cases of malfunction and in some cases fire for Hyundai cars and 10 for Kia cars due to ABS problem.

It is not the first time that the two South Korean companies have had to intervene on cars sold in the United States due to fire risks: since 2015 they have had to do so more than twenty times, for a total of 9.2 million vehicles.
