Hyundai and Kia Recall 3.3 Million Vehicles in the US Due to Fire Risk

South Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia are issuing recalls for 3.3 million vehicles in the United States due to the risk of them unexpectedly catching fire. “Until these recalled vehicles have been repaired,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement, “the safest place to park them is outside and away from homes and other structures. Fires can occur when the vehicle is parked and off or while driving.” These are 1.64 million Hyundai and Genesis vehicles, relating to models from 2010 to 2015, and 1.73 million Kia, from 2010 to 2017. The problem derives from a defect in the ABS system of the vehicles from which the brake fluid and cause an electrical short. “Hyundai – continues the authority – plans to notify owners to take their vehicles to the nearest dealer to replace the ABS module fuse. Kia, however, is still working on a possible solution”.

Neither company is aware of “any accidents, injuries or deaths associated with this defect.”

Hyundai recorded 21 vehicle fires, as well as “22 thermal incidents,” including visible smoke, combustion and melting. Kia recorded one fire in the engine compartment, three fires in the passenger compartment and six cases of component melting.
