[서울파이낸스 문영재 기자] Hyundai Motors and Kia achieved the highest sales record in the US market in the first half of this year. It was found that sales of eco-friendly cars increased despite the aftermath of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which subsidizes only North American electric vehicles.
According to Hyundai Motor and Kia on the 4th, the number of units sold in the US market in the first half of this year increased by 16.7% from the previous year to 820,180 units. Hyundai Motor (including Genesis) recorded 425,847 units, up 15.2%, and Kia’s 394,333 units, up 18.3%. This is the highest ever, exceeding the previous highest sales of 804,944 units in the first half of 2021.
The number of eco-friendly cars sold, which drove the performance, increased by 46.8% from the previous year to 133,171 units, the highest ever in the first half of the year. Electric cars sold 38,457 units (11.4% ↑) and hybrid cars 94,609 units (69.2% ↑). The number of units sold by manufacturer is 72,762 for Hyundai and 60,409 for Kia.
The best-selling model among electric vehicles was the Kona EV (5148 units), followed by the Ioniq 6 (3245 units). Among hybrid cars, the Sportage HEV sold the most with 20,731 units, followed by the Tucson HEV with 19,969 units, the Santa Fe HEV with 10,769 units, and the Niro HEV with 13,789 units.
Automotive News, a magazine specializing in the American automobile industry, published a report on the 1st and predicted that Hyundai Motor and Kia could surpass Stellantis (806,819 units) and rank fourth in US sales in the first half of this year. 1st is GM, 2nd is Toyota, and 3rd is Ford.
Meanwhile, last month, Hyundai Motor and Kia sold 145,849 units in the US market, up 9.9% from the same period last year. Hyundai Motor sold 70,534 units, up 11.5%, and Kia sold 70,495 units, up 8.2%.
Sales of eco-friendly cars increased by 55.6% to 25,913 units. Electric cars sold 8,835 units, up 23.9 percent, setting a record for the month. Hybrid cars were delivered to 17,070 units, up 80.1%.
