Specialists studied the health status of nearly 1.3 million people over 65 years of age, to whom doctors prescribed pressure-lowering drugs. The results of the study published the journal Hypertension.
For seven years, the probability of deaths for people with good health at the beginning of the study was 16%, and for people with ailments, the risk increased to 64%.
Scientists have found that regular medication for prescribing hypertension by 44% reduced the risks in older people in both groups – with good and very poor health.
As one of the authors of the study, Giuseppe Mansia, noted that specialists knew that medicines for hypertension generally protect the body. However, the fact that they can protect patients with other diseases was a revelation for them.
